Prohibition Is Over!

Prohibition Is Over!

With the words “Prohibition is over” Congressman Ed Perlmutter closed out the August 22nd CannaGather event at Cultivated Synergy. The crowd was exclusively cannabis industry professionals, and given Congressman Perlmutter’s work to get the SAFE Banking Act crafted and through the committee process – which he told us took years – Ed was received as something of a returning war hero by the crowd.

But his last three words were the most powerful. Regarding marijuana:
“Prohibition is over.”

He cited the number of states of that have some form of legal weed. He cited the trends. He said he’s seen a change in the attitudes of those in Congress who initially simply had a “No way” attitude to anything cannabis related.

Ed’s blast email the same day noted:
“The SAFE Banking Act ends the public safety problem for legitimate cannabis businesses in Colorado and throughout the country by eliminating the need to operate on a cash-only basis. It now has 206 cosponsors, more than two dozen of which are Republicans.
“This is all on the heels of the National Association of Attorneys General and National Association of State Treasurers throwing their support behind this much-needed reform. There is now widespread agreement that it’s time to respect the will of the voters in 47 states (plus the District of Columbia) who have legalized some form of marijuana use.”

Prohibition is over.

March 6 – Save The Date!

March 6, 2020 is the date of the Cannabis Public Policy Conference. We will look at Financial Issues (banking, investment), the future of medical (CBD, FDA, and the for-profit model) and the Marketing Restrictions of the cannabis industry, all from a public policy perspective.

If you haven’t received your invite yet, that’s because no one has, so please don’t take it personally! Anyone can attend. This conference is open to the public, and there will be a number of options to participate.

Sponsors will help set the agenda and are the main drivers of the conference. Exhibitors will have access to our audience and more. Ticketholders will be able to participate in workshops and other breakout sessions in addition to the usual Q&A of panelists, of which there will be numerous opportunities and options.

There is plenty more to come – gamification, rock star panelists, pre-conference surveys where you can help refine and drive the agenda. Leave us your email address, we’ll keep you posted.

And look for our new Meetup group announcement next week!

MED Looks To Get Social

It was standing room only today at the Colorado Department of Revenue Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) Rule Making Work Group meeting.

There appears to be interest in social consumption of marijuana based on the turnout at today’s MED Rule Making Work Group meeting.

Pursuant to HB 19-1230, MED needs to set the rules around social consumption of cannabis. The bill is designed to alleviate the conundrum of legal weed with nowhere for tourists to smoke it. Colorado residents have only their personal residences. [Technically speaking, there are a few dozen hotels that allow cannabis use as well as driving tours where you can smoke weed in a private vehicle.]

The crowd today at MED headquarters in Lakewood was interested in the details of public, social consumption of marijuana, such as whether bars will be allowed to offer both alcohol and pot, and what hours of operation these “Marijuana Hospitality Businesses” will be allowed to operate.

A public hearing will be held on October 15th, click here for more info.

20/20 Growth is planning a conference on the public policy issues surrounding cannabis early next year. There will be a breakout session dedicated to the evolving and forth coming challenges of allowing for social consumption.

$300,000 A Month

“How much money are you losing every month due to marketing restrictions in the cannabis industry?” I asked one local cannabis industry pioneer. He shifted uncomfortably. He sat silently. I could see the numbers rumbling around in his head.

“Three hundred thousand dollars?” he finally hazarded as a guess. That’s a few million a year!

I’ve yet to meet a cannabis business owner who doesn’t agree that the industry needs sensible regulation. The conventional wisdom is that they were right to start with regulations that erred to the strict side. As the legal cannabis industry continues to mature, there are a number of areas where we think a good hard review is in order:

– Banking challenges

– Social consumption

– Investments and capital markets

– and the aforementioned marketing restrictions.

Our Goal

With the launch of 20/20 Growth, I am excited to facilitate a platform where thought leaders, innovators and other entrepreneurs can meet and collaborate with public policy officials tasked with protecting the public.
The guiding mission will always be to bring the future forward faster in a manner that delivers the best outcomes to the largest number of people!

Having founded a Chamber of Commerce a few years ago, I’ve been down this path. I know how to bring together companies of all sizes, how to create impactful events, and how to facilitate a public space where ideas and concerns can be shared and exchanged.

In a sense, the word conference doesn’t do our events justice! For example, we use cutting edge techniques like gamification and crowd sourcing.

Instead of keynote speeches, we have diverse panels of experts.

Instead of sitting passively, attendees are given multiple opportunities to actively engage the process.
Our breakout sessions have an advance agenda that is continually evolving leading up to the day of the event, with the goal of creating results at the conference!

Innovation is coming at us faster than ever. Some believe government protections are more important than ever before. I’m obsessed with creating a neutral platform for all parties to dialogue and, ideally, find an agreeable path forward.

If innovation gets your blood moving too, I encourage you to join us as we bring the Future Forward Faster!
